Precision Care for Precocious Puberty
Tuntun Pediatric Hospital is here to guide your child’s healthy growth journey. Pediatric Endocrinology
What is Precocious Puberty?

Precocious puberty occurs when a child’s body begins showing signs of puberty earlier than the normal age range.
When puberty starts too early, it can lead to:
- Premature closing of the growth plates.
- A rapid early growth spurt that is deceiving.
- A shorter final adult height. The most crucial part of managing precocious puberty isn’t simply noting that physical changes are happening early—it’s accurately determining whether premature puberty is actively progressing. At Tuntun Pediatric Hospital, we carefully evaluate your child’s growth rate and trajectory, moving to the next steps only when absolutely necessary.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
- Once growth plates close, they cannot reopen.
- Early physical changes are often subtle and easy to miss.
When evaluated early and accurately, many children only require careful monitoring without the need for medical intervention. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis always takes precedence over rushing into treatment.

Key Signs of Precocious Puberty
While symptoms vary from child to child, you may notice the following changes:
In Girls:
Breast development earlier than peers, sudden and rapid increases in height, changes in body odor, acne, early onset of menstruation (menarche), vaginal discharge, or the appearance of pubic or underarm hair.
In Boys:
Early enlargement of testicles or penis, rapid growth spurts compared to peers, increased body hair, a deepening voice, acne, or experiencing erections and wet dreams.
※ Note: It is important to distinguish true precocious puberty from simple differences in physique or temporary bodily changes.
Our Precision Diagnostic Approach
Our in-depth evaluation for precocious puberty isn’t about running as many tests as possible. It is a careful, step-by-step assessment designed to determine if treatment is truly necessary. We do not apply a one-size-fits-all testing approach. Instead, moving to the next diagnostic step depends entirely on the results of the previous one.
- We start with the most basic, essential tests.
- We do not proceed to advanced testing unless clinically indicated.
- We interpret all results comprehensively to get the full picture.

Diagnostic Workflow
Here is how we evaluate your child’s condition:
STEP 01: Determining the Need for Further Testing
We begin with a bone age assessment (X-ray) to check if your child’s bone maturation is advancing faster than their chronological age.
If within the normal range for their peers:
→ We simply monitor their progress (watchful waiting) without further testing.
If advancing rapidly:
→ We proceed to the next stage of evaluation.
STEP 02: Initial Precision Assessment (Blood Tests & Ultrasound)
This step involves combining laboratory tests and ultrasound imaging to get a comprehensive view of any changes related to growth or the onset of puberty.

Blood Tests
Evaluates hormone levels related to growth and puberty, along with overall health.

Ultrasound Imaging
Examines internal reproductive organs to assess physical development and maturation.
If no distinct abnormalities are found:
→ We recommend continued observation without medical treatment.
If further assessment is required:
→ We conduct a comprehensive clinical review to confirm if puberty is actively progressing.
How We Interpret the Results
A diagnosis of precocious puberty—and the decision to treat it—is never based on a single test result. We only consider medical treatment when the following criteria are met concurrently:
- 1 The rate of bone age advancement is abnormally fast.
- 2 There is clear evidence of active pubertal hormones.
- 3 Physical development is confirmed to be actively progressing.
Precocious Puberty Treatment Guide
Medical intervention is not necessary for every child.
We only recommend treatment when there is a risk to your child’s final adult height. Any decision to proceed is made carefully, following a thorough consultation with parents.
What is
Injection Therapy?
- Injection therapy temporarily pauses premature puberty signals. This prevents the growth plates from closing too early, protecting your child’s growth potential and final adult height.
- Regulates the excessive release of pubertal hormones.
- Slows down the maturation of growth plates.
- Allows for the resumption of normal puberty once treatment ends.
- This treatment does not “erase” puberty; it simply controls the timing and speed.
Who Do We
Recommend It For? - Children whose bone age is advancing significantly faster than their chronological age.
- Children with clear signs of active pubertal hormones.
- Children who are projected to lose final adult height if the condition is left untreated.
- We never base treatment decisions solely on a child being tall or on isolated lab numbers.
How the Treatment
Works - Injections are administered at regular, scheduled intervals.
- The dosage cycle and overall duration are customized to your child’s specific condition.
- Throughout the treatment, we regularly monitor growth velocity, growth plate changes, and overall well-being.
- Therapy is strictly maintained only for the necessary duration.
- We determine the right time to stop treatment together, based on your child’s growth progress. Once stopped, normal puberty will naturally resume.
A Message
to Parents - When it comes to precocious puberty, an accurate diagnosis is far more important than a rushed treatment.
- Depending on the test results, careful observation without medication is often the best course of action. Active monitoring is a crucial part of our care plan.
- At Tuntun Pediatric Hospital, we rely on precise, comprehensive evaluations to recommend only the care and treatment your child truly needs.
