Case Study: Swift Detection and Tertiary Referral of Severe Blood Abnormalities in a 2-Year-Old Girl Presenting with Abdominal Pain and Pallor
When a child experiences abdominal pain accompanied by unusual paleness and severe lethargy, it may be more than just a simple stomach bug. Extreme pallor or a sudden drop in energy levels are critical red flags that require immediate blood work to check for underlying conditions.
This is a case study of a 2-year-old girl who visited our clinic for a stomach ache and vomiting. Through prompt ultrasound imaging and blood tests, we identified a significant hematologic abnormality and immediately transferred her to a tertiary hospital for specialized care.
Patient Profile
- Age/Gender: Born in 2022 (Female)
- Presenting Symptoms: Abdominal pain, vomiting, pallor (paleness), and severe lethargy
Diagnosis & Evaluation
- During the outpatient visit, the child exhibited abdominal pain, noticeable paleness, and generalized weakness.
- A simple abdominal X-ray revealed decreased bowel motility.
- Urgent blood tests revealed severe anemia alongside other abnormal findings.
- Given the child’s overall compromised state, an immediate transfer to a higher-tier hospital was initiated.
Further imaging evaluations indicated changes in the liver, spleen, and intestinal tract. Taking the clinical symptoms and blood test results together, we could not rule out a hematologic or oncologic condition. We referred the patient to a specialized tertiary center without a moment’s delay.
Follow-up & Outcome Following a comprehensive evaluation at the tertiary hospital, the child was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and is currently receiving specialized pediatric oncology treatment.
Why This Matters What initially looked like a common gastrointestinal infection was caught early because our medical team: ✔ Recognized the critical signs of extreme paleness and lethargy. ✔ Utilized basic blood tests to uncover severe underlying abnormalities. ✔ Made a swift, decisive transfer to ensure the child received immediate specialized care.
For children, basic blood tests can provide life-saving clues, especially when they experience: ✔ Recurrent abdominal pain ✔ Severe pallor (unusual paleness) ✔ Unexplained lethargy or loss of energy ✔ Prolonged, non-specific symptoms
At Tuntun Children’s Hospital, we are dedicated to vigilance and proactive care. We provide parents with peace of mind by offering: ✔ A systematic, step-by-step diagnostic approach right in our outpatient clinic. ✔ Immediate clinical judgment the moment abnormalities are detected. ✔ A seamless, rapid referral network with top-tier tertiary hospitals.
We are here to look closer, catch severe conditions early, and ensure your child gets the right treatment at the exact right time.
